Hart adds wellness dogs to help with mental health issues

Hart’s wellness center recently welcomed new four-legged additions to its wellness staff. Starting Thursday, August 19, therapy dogs will be available to students weekly at lunch.

Hart gets these dogs from an organization called Alliance of Therapy Dogs. They visit a variety of facilities with their dogs; such as airports, nursing homes and schools. The Hart wellness center, led by wellness counselor Lisa Siebaldi, introduced these canines to our school with students in mind.

“Therapy animals can bring a smile and sense of calmness to students dealing with stress, anxiety and loneliness,” said Siebaldi.

Because of the eventful last two years we have all experienced, many students share feelings of concern and apprehension regarding COVID-19 and returning to school. Spending time with a dog, rather than focusing on worries, has brought a sense of comfort for some students.

“Some kids just enjoy petting a furry friend in the middle of their day as a source of happiness,” Siebaldi said.
