After going on a two-year production hiatus, Harry Styles released his sophomore album Fine Line December 13, 2019. In his twelve new songs, Styles puts a twist on bubblegum pop that leaves audiences with nostalgia for 80s and 90s aesthetics. 

Much like Harry Styles (Styles’ first solo album), Fine Line presents a variety of moods and messages throughout the album. “Golden,” “Watermelon Sugar” and “Treat People With Kindness” are upbeat, feel-good songs that are best when paired with the car windows down and the volume all the way up, whilst “Falling,” “Cherry” and “To Be So Lonely” resonate with lovesickness and vulnerability (I recommend a carton of ice cream and some tissues). Even though the tones of the album constantly shift, Styles’ modernized classic rock vibe is persistent in every track.

Styles’ melancholy tunes have left many audiences in tears, but others have been left desiring his energy that became iconic in Harry Styles. On his previous tour, Styles was rocking out and singing at the top of his lungs to “Kiwi” and “Carolina.” Now, it seems that he’s put his performance energy into his songwriting and lyricism, resulting in better quality songs but not as much outward energy. The success of this diversion of energy is debatable amongst fans, but we can agree Fine Line is not a flop.
