Boygenius’s sophomore album is a musical masterpiece

March 31 2023, the group known as boygenius put out their second album titled The Record, and fans were ecstatic. Boygenius is a group of artists including Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers; all are more well known for their own solo music.

This album is a masterpiece to say the least. They open the album with a fully acapella song titled “Without You Without Them”. This song is one of my skips on the album but I can tell this song was meant as an opener rather than a more serious song. My top three songs on the entire album are “Satanist”, “Cool About It” and “Not Strong Enough”.

“Satanist” is an upbeat song that is an almost happier song than the other tracks. Each member of the group has their own verse. Julien asks “Will you be a satanist with me?”, Lucy asks “Will you be an anarchist with me?” and Phoebe asks “Will you be a nihilist with me?” This song is a perfect song. I’d give this song an A+ plus if I could.

“Cool About It”, on the other hand, is one of the most depressing and sad songs I have ever heard. This song is all about pretending to be fine and unbothered because you like someone so much that you just accept the pain they cause you. My favorite line from this song is “So I take some offense when you say, ‘No regrets’”. The acoustic sound of the song completes it perfectly.

Finally, my third favorite song on the album is “Not Strong Enough”, which came out two weeks prior to the album. The song repeats the line “always an angel never a God ” throughout the chorus, which is a simple but beautiful line. The music video is an adorable home video style video that features Phoebe, Lucy and Julien doing normal things like going to the Santa Monica Pier and driving around California.

Overall this album is insanely amazing. I give it 5/5 stars.
