The 95th Academy Awards ruffled some feathers

March 12, 2023, the 95th Academy Awards were held. And, while the event has become somewhat controversial in recent years, this year’s ceremony managed to please many viewers.

One of the most talked about nominated films was Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, a film which received near universal acclaim from both critics and audience. Many fans of the film expected or hoped that it would receive recognition at the Oscars. This ended up coming to fruition, as Everything, Everywhere, All At Once won the coveted Best Picture Award, as well as several others such as Writing (Original Screenplay), Directing and Film Editing. Additionally, Ke Huy Quan, Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis won Actor in Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role and Actress in a Supporting Role respectively for their parts in the film. The movie was additionally nominated for several other categories.

While Everything, Everywhere, All At Once received the most recognition, the roster of nominees was more diverse than in many previous Oscars, and several other films won awards. All Quiet on the Western Front tied with Everything, Everywhere, All At Once in number of awards received, winning Cinematography, International Feature Film, Music (Original Score) and Production Design. Women Talking, Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, The Whale, Naatu Naatu and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also all won an Oscar each. Notably, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the only Marvel Cinematic Universe film other than the original Black Panther to win an Oscar. Brendan Fraser also won Actor in a Leading Role for his role as Charlie in The Whale.

Looking at the Animated Feature Film category, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio beat out other acclaimed animated films such as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse won Short Film (Animated) and An Irish Goodbye won Short Film (Live Action). Finally, the Documentary Feature Film and Documentary Short Film Oscars were taken by Navalry and The Elephant Whisperers.
