Get a head start on life with the Workforce Prep class

Many students at Hart work outside of school for various different reasons. Being a part of the work-force is a time commitment for those who participate, and the work experience class at Hart aims to help alleviate the stress of this by giving students class credit for the time that they dedicate to their job and prepare them to navigate the working world better.

“The idea behind it is that we have many students who do work, and have the opportunity to have a job, but we also want to give them skills for something down the road.” said Mr. Thurm, teacher of work experience.

The class not only gives credits for working over 150 hours per semester, but also teaches its student and helps them with making resumes, cover letters and even provides resources for the students to apply to jobs.

“The class taught me how to make resumes and how to call up employers and introduce myself to them.“ said Artem Sukiasyan, a student enrolled in work experience.

“I like how the class is two days out of the week and relaxed. It helps me keep track of many things, such as my hours,”  Sukiasyan said.

This is a common sentiment amongst the students of work experience as Mr. Thurm aims to keep the class relaxed and limit stress seen in normal classes as “The time commitment comes with the job” Mr. Thurm said.

While the work experience class is a new concept it has worked successfully so far and Mr. Thrum hopes that it’ll spread to other schools as he believes that it would be a great addition to the roster of classes in the Hart District.
