Gavin Locke is a sophomore at Hart High School. One of the many things that Gavin values closely is his newly found passion for speech and debate. He is a valued member of Hart’s speech and debate team and is looking forward to contributing his efforts towards the upcoming competitions. Additionally, he wishes to emphasize the importance of influencing new topics and ideas to help support his peers in class. Not to mention that he makes sure to set aside time for volunteer work for the speech and debate team. One of his favorite parts about being a member of the team is meeting new people, and socializing with his classmates. Speech and debate has brought forth many bright new ideas and a desire to be involved.
Gavin also plays on Hart’s JV volleyball team. Since 8th grade, he has worked hard to improve his ability and finds enjoyment in coaching others who need help the most. Hart athletics have also essentially changed Gavin’s perspective on sports. One major part of being on a team is having the mental capacity and determination to give everything your best, even if you believe that you can’t. Some people may not be meant for that type of hustle. Volleyball to Gavin is perceived as a mental game, where only the smartest will succeed, and the shy struggle. Especially in a sport that is extremely competitive, with most plays being highly reliant on your teammate’s ability to assist in a play.
His beliefs have helped him excel in all of his classes, including speech and debate, and even in his athletic high school career. Going forward, he wishes to achieve a scholarship from CSUN University to pursue volleyball. Throughout Gavin’s life, he wasn’t always amused by athletics, and many of his hobbies had little to do with volleyball. He believes that volleyball has been a great addition in his life. He has met many people that he is still friends with today, and wants to make sure that he stays on the right track all through high school and college as well.
