Son of infamous drug lord ‘El Chapo’ arrested

Ovidio Guzmán López, son of the infamous drug lord, El Chapo, was arrested for the second time January 5, 2023 on suspicion of leading the Sinaloa Cartel since the arrest of his father in 2016.

When López was previously arrested in 2019, he was quickly released after many threats from cartels and those loyal to them. Known as El Ratón, the 32-year-old was wanted for conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States. López is also one of the biggest traffickers of fentanyl. The state department additionally has information about López ordering people to murder a Mexican singer who did not want to perform at his wedding.

In the process of capturing López, ten soldiers and nineteen cartel operatives were killed due to many vehicles being set on fire by those in close proximity to the cartel and the cartels shooting at planes as a response to the arrest.

Throughout the city of Culiacan, residents were instructed to remain hidden in their houses while the police blockaded the streets, trying to control the violence. 1,000 more troops were sent to assist security, and flights were canceled in hopes to protect everyone involved. López is currently being held at the Altiplano maximum security federal prison, the same prison his father escaped from in 2015.
