THE SMOKE SIGNAL

Why are U.S. citizens so uneducated about global politics and government?

It seems when our minds try to come up with the general concepts of politics in other countries, we seem to not really understand or have an accurate answer to what really goes on.

Politics for us tends to come down to the fatal sides of Democratic and Republican. As for me, both seem to have pros and cons, yet my stance lies undecided. However, to apply this form of politics in most other countries is not an accurate reflection of a citizen’s view on politics. Iceland’s unitary parliamentary republic has the head of the state as president; the parliament is mostly ceremonial. In Africa, countries like Burkina and others nearby are choosing to suspend constitutional provisions for their government.

And yes, I was quite unaware of these governments up until this very moment. Which only makes me wonder, why are we never informed of these critical events?

Now the main question I wonder is if this is America’s doing, or the other countries’? To say we have the United Nations above us all to “control and communicate” the issues that all kinds of people around the world are facing seems a little overstated. Does the United Nations want to hide these faults in case more chaos forms? Fears of rebellion and takeovers are always at risk, but in reality, they are much more common than we think.

We tend to think of rebellions as a part of older history. Saying a rebellion occurred is saying the government couldn’t control their own citizens, in other words they failed their people. And to have that now, in a time where we are so “evolved” and aware of our actions, is morally wrong and even pathetic. Weakness in government shows a chance for others to gain leadership much easier than before.

Not to mention, when we do receive any form of news these days they all seem to be laced with that extra “reality television” aspect to them. Due to our dependency on constant cheesy entertainment, our media has become something we can’t rely on anymore.

We are afraid to admit our problems so in return we hide them, making all of society dumbly unaware.
