Why a Dreamer Would Write

Why on earth would a dreamer write? Is the library in their head too full of ideas? Does their brain have too many thoughts to keep up? Too many plans to remember? A dreamer, who is always wanting more. A dreamer, who believes anything is possible. A dreamer, who dreams up a thousand different realities for themselves, seeing the possibilities in every one.

Why should she write? Is it to show she’s serious? She is. Is it to attach weight to the many things she says? She knows approval won’t get her anywhere. No. It is to work through the roller coaster of emotions she feels as the dream inches closer. The dream that was once so comforting to hold on to now turned childish to even think about. To search for the reason she chose this dream, the dream she stayed unruly hours thinking about, twisting and turning from excitement. Perhaps if one were to paint the image she’s engraved in her head, the one with the blue and greens of the coast and the whites and greys of a lab, all the colorful details of the life she yearns for would speak with more eloquence than all the words of dreamers before her. Such a piece would need no silly explanation, no defense for why she thinks this fantasy is plausible. What? Publish her heart? The little piece in her brain that pumps out these ideas? Absurd.  Her heart is too restless for that. Her mind too quick, moving from book to book, career to career, country to country.

A dreamer is born in a world where she is told she can be whatever she wants to be. She grows up trying and learning new things, adding to her long list of dreams. A singer like the ones on TV,  a therapist like her mother, a scientist for her new favorite subject, a traveler for her newfound love of the world. In a dream, I look for peace. I look for purpose. Such a quest is not without pain. Who can believe such laughable dreams and feel no hurt? On days when the dream feels too fantastical, too much work, the dreamer can read her thoughts from many years ago. Was she too young to understand? Possibly. But as she rereads, the dreamer listens to her once hopeful heart and remembers why she chose this dream. With every page turned in her diary, she sees how far she has come. The highs and lows her imagination has taken her on. Many say writers are the true dreamers, and I would agree, for a writer lets their mind run wild, their creativity flow, and has the amazing ability to build a whole new world with intricate detail all in their head.
