January 6 rioters sentenced

October 3, Fedrico Klein, a United States Marine Corps veteran, was sentenced to six years in prison due to his involvement in the Capitol riots that took place on January 6, 2021. Klein was part of former President Donald Trump’s state department for the South American region that deals with foreign policy.

According to AP News, Klein joined the rioters on the front lines at the tunnel entrance of the Capitol’s lower west terrace. He participated in assaulting officers, urging more rioters, and blocking the door from being shut with a riot shield at the tunnel entrance prolonging the violence.

Klein was sentenced Friday, November 3, 2023 when he didn’t testify at his trial and declined to address Trevor Mcfadden, a U.S. Judge for the district of Columbia, who had sentenced Klein to five years and 10 months in prison for shady actions realted to his time in cabient.

What’s more, the jury and Judge Mcfadden made the connection between Klein’s departure from his cabinet position and his involvement in the riot had close relations to Biden’s electoral victory. Some speculate his motives for joining was related to his desire to keep his job.

Stanley E Woodward Jr., an attorney, had helped lessen Klein’s sentencing by focusing on the events of the riot and not the other shady involvements he was a part of in the state department.

“Accordingly, Mr. Klein should be sentenced for his actual role in the events of the day, and not the more egregious conduct of others with which the government would have Mr. Klein be found guilty by association,” Woodward wrote.

Mcfadden held trail without testimony for Klein in July 2023 changing his initial sentencing to house arrest and sentenced 12,000 other attendes with 700 of them pleading guilty and two-thirds of them receiving three days to 22 years of imprisonment.
