Mike Johnson elected as new Speaker of the House after 22 days

The House of Representatives ran for 22 days without a speaker due to the GOP’s delayed vote for a Speaker. Nominee Jim Johnson failed to win republicans votes three times and after 22 days of chaos in the House, the Republican Party finally settled on a different candidate.

Wednesday October 25, the Republican Party elected Mike Johnson for Speaker of the House. The position has a lot of responsibilities, but Johnson must find a way to bring the Republican party together. McCarthy struggled to unite the Republican party and the new speaker will have to struggle through the same problem. Although Johnson was voted to be the speaker, many of the members deny his beliefs.

Johnson is openly Evangelical Christian which does not fare well with many Americans, since many do not approve of the second in line for the presidency and third in charge of the country being an Evangelical Christian.

Johnson fights for banning abortions, aiding Ukraine, and his religious beliefs. Journalist Stephen Groves from the Associated Press reports that Mike Johnson does not agree on anything with the president and they have only met twice. Politically and Religiously he is drastically different from President Biden. The contrast is necessary for a well-balanced house but it is a controversy for many in America.

The first bill signed by Johnson was to cut Biden’s climate change funding. “The first major legislation House Republicans passed under newly installed Speaker Mike Johnson would cut billions of dollars in consumer rebates for energy efficiency upgrades included in President Joe Biden’s signature climate law,” said journalist Ari Natter from Bloomberg News.
