MORENO VALLEY, CA — A 17-year-old boy died after a single-car crash on the 60 Freeway in Moreno Valley, where authorities say a Tesla driver lost control while trying to pass traffic on the right shoulder.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened about 9:40 p.m. Sunday near Heacock Avenue. The teen was a rear passenger and was thrown from the vehicle.
CHP says driver was speeding before impact
According to investigators, the adult driver of the Tesla was going too fast and attempted to move around other traffic by using the freeway shoulder. The vehicle then struck a guardrail after the driver lost control.
Authorities did not release the identities of those involved.
Four other people were injured in the wreck
The driver was described as severely injured. Two other passengers also suffered injuries, while a third passenger was not hurt.
Officials did not give an update on whether anyone was taken to a hospital or the extent of the other passengers’ injuries.
Loaded firearm found inside the Tesla
The CHP said officers found a loaded firearm in the car after the crash. Investigators have not said who the weapon belonged to or whether it played a role in the collision.
The crash remains under investigation.
