SAN DIEGO, CA — Two people who stopped to help after an early-morning freeway crash were struck and killed Thursday on Interstate 15 near State Route 76, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said the sequence began when a Honda CRV rear-ended a Toyota Sienna around 4:10 a.m., leaving the Toyota stalled in the northbound lanes.
Second impact hits people who stopped to help
Investigators said two good Samaritans pulled over to assist the driver of the Honda CRV. While they were at the scene, another oncoming vehicle hit the crash site.
The force of that second collision pushed into the two bystanders, killing both.
Other drivers suffer minor injuries
CHP said the drivers of the vehicles involved had only minor injuries. As of Thursday, no charges were expected in connection with the crash.
Officer Hunter Gerber said the investigation remained ongoing.
Northbound lanes and ramps were closed for hours
The deadly crash shut down all northbound lanes and some transition ramps between SR-76 and I-15 for several hours during the morning commute.
Traffic reopened around 11 a.m. after investigators cleared the scene.
