Police investigate a two-vehicle crash at an intersection in Madera County, California

MADERA COUNTY, CA — A 19-year-old man died after a late-night collision in Madera County, where investigators say an 18-year-old woman failed to stop at an intersection and struck the Jeep he was riding in.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday. The woman driving the Chevy Malibu died at the scene, and authorities later said they were still investigating what caused the wreck.

Victims identified after the Tuesday night intersection crash

California Highway Patrol identified the dead drivers as Bobby Criado, 19, and Esmeralda Marcela Gutierrez, 18. Criado was flown to a hospital after suffering major injuries, including severe brain trauma, but died Saturday.

His family said doctors told them his injuries were not expected to be survivable. Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other people suffered injuries in the collision

A 21-year-old woman riding in the Chevy Malibu was hurt, but her injuries were described as minor.

In the Jeep, a 25-year-old driver and a 10-year-old passenger also suffered injuries, which officials said were minor to moderate.

Officials have not said whether drugs or alcohol played a role

Authorities have not released any information indicating whether alcohol or drugs were involved. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

A vigil was held Thursday for both Criado and Gutierrez while he was still in critical condition. The crash also drew messages of sympathy online from people reacting to the loss.
