Growing injuries in sports: a national concern

Sports is the joy of millions of fans across the globe, but what’s not fun is athletes becoming injured. Professional athletes are at constant risk of injuries, concussions, and broken bones. What’s concerning to many is the rates of injuries rising. Outside of the field, the cause may be training, but during the field is what people are so concerned about.

Injuries have always been common, especially in many professional circles, however recently the number of injuries has been on the rise in Major League Baseball, the National Hockey league, with only the National Football League decreasing.

In the National Hockey league, Ice Hockey is a very fast paced sport being rated one of the more dangerous sports. Many of the athletes receive more concussions compared to athletes of other sports, even more than football. Concussions are no laughing matter with the sideeffects ranging from depression, memory loss issues, and an increased risk of suicide.

Major League Baseball has always seen the least number of injuries compared to the NFL or the NHL. Baseball, as a whole, has issues with performance-enhancing drugs. Even major league baseball has no exception, which in particular, has a bad history with performance-enhancing drug abuse, specifically steroids. Jose Canseco, a former MLB player, and a notorious steroid user, has even gone on to accuse many major players of drug abuse, all turning out to be correct.

Steroids are so widespread with countless communities infamous for the abuse of performance enhancers cyclists, bodybuilders, weightlifters, and boxing. This isn’t saying that all members are using but the fact there are so many sports in which there are people openly admitting to the use of steroids. The issue is becoming less of a taboo subject and more of a normalized subject in society to the point where it’s openly discussed on Tiktok and Youtube. While others might say this is good that people are more aware, not all influencers are warning the illicit use, some are promoting it.

This inflation of injuries in professional sports is a concern for not only athletes, but the organizations behind them and the fans. It’s crucial for steps to be taken in order to ensure the safety and integrity of the world’s favorite pastime.
