President Donald Trump held his State of the Union Address on the February 5, 2019. Throughout his speech, he discussed bipartisanship in Congress, the economy, women in the workforce, abortion, trade and international relations, national security and the border wall. He explained how Congress passed VA (United States Department of Veterans Affairs) reforms, other pieces of legislation to assist the opioid crisis and are discussing the FIRST STEP Act. Trump also weighed in on New York’s new abortion law and hopes that Congress will pass legislation that prohibits late-term abortion. Another point was on immigration and the wall. Trump primarily wants the wall to stop illegal activities, like human trafficking. His plan is to place the wall along the most problematic points.  

Additionally, President Trump mentioned that yet another meeting with Kim Jong-un will take place February 27 and 28 in Vietnam. He also briefly discussed Iran and anti-Semitism, the new Venezuelan president and says a peace agreement between the U.S. and Afghanistan is being discussed. He also talked about the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement and that China and the U.S. are discussing a new trade deal. With the economy, Trump exclaimed there was 5.3 million new jobs and low unemployment rates. He announced that 58% of the new jobs are occupied by women, and Congress has a record number women in office. The President concluded his speech by telling Americans to focus on a future of greatness and unity as well as sharing his wish of the U.S being an example of hope and glory for other nations.

“No matter the trials we face, no matter the challenges to come, we must go forward together. We must keep America first in our hearts. We must keep freedom alive in our souls. And we must always keep faith in America’s destiny — that one Nation, under God, must be the hope and the promise and the light and the glory among all the nations of the world!” he said.
