Isn’t It Romantic debuted February 13, 2019 and was received with love by audiences everywhere. The film starred Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra and succeeded in its goal of defying the laws of “rom-coms” as we know them.
From a young age, aspiring architect Natalie (Wilson) has believed that romantic comedies incorrectly portray how love works and that happy endings like those in movies do not happen to “girls like her,” as Natalie sees herself as unattractive and unwanted. She constantly criticizes the clichés of rom-coms: the spontaneous dance numbers, makeover montages, kissing in the rain, love at first sight and the like.
All of this is a constant until Natalie hits her head and wakes up in a seemingly alternate universe, which she later finds out is the romantic comedy version of her life. While trying to find a way back to her old life, she assumes that to return she must to end her story the way all rom-coms do: falling in love. As Natalie questions who she must fall in love with, she is stuck between choosing the “hot guy,” Blake (Hemsworth), or Josh, her best friend from work (Devine). Eventually, she realizes that the person she needed to love all along was herself. By finally appreciating herself, Natalie is able to return to her regular life, this time with a confident mindset that sets her on a path to success.
While many viewers may have entered theaters with expectations and predictions for Isn’t It Romantic, only a few may have guessed the overarching message of self-love. With a refreshing new theme for future romantic comedies to adopt and an outstanding delivery from the cast, this movie touched the hearts of many across the globe and especially those who needed to hear its message the most.
