This year’s Midterm Election was spread all over the news during the months leading up to the big day in November. For Democrats, it was an opportunity to bring themselves back into the House of Representatives and Senate as a majority. For Republicans, it was an opportunity to keep themselves in a firm position in the government. The Midterm Election is the first opportunity that the people have to pass judgement on the current President.

The election resulted in the Democrats taking over the House and the Republicans being the majority party in the Senate. Before the midterms, the Republicans had control of both houses within Congress. The Democrats have been waiting for a “blue wave” in which they would be able to have more control on President Trump’s decisions. This was accomplished by taking over districts where the President was unpopular among voters. They gained 27 seats in the House which secured their majority.  The Republicans managed to keep their majority leadership in Senate, gaining two seats lost from the Democrats. It was already projected that they would keep their place in the Senate after the midterms.

Besides making changes in the House and Senate, the election also covered governor’s seats. Democrats were successful in winning governorships including crucial swing states, like Nevada and Colorado. However, they were unsuccessful in retrieving states like Georgia and Florida. Many states changed their parties, like Kansas and Wisconsin, from being Republican to Democrat.

Although the election took place in early November, there are still recounts and local and statewide elections taking place through December. They consist of governor and senator races through multiple states ( i.e. Nevada and Arizona). There are also recounts taking place in the Senate because many races were too close to call.
