Kanye West came out with his album, Ye, June 1, 2018. The album is fairly short and consists of seven songs titled “I Thought About Killing You”, “Yikes”, “All Mine”, “Wouldn’t Leave” (feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR), “No Mistakes” (feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR), “Ghost Town” (feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR), and “Violent Crimes”. West sampled beats from old songs and reinvented them in this album. Some of my favorite songs on the album included “No Mistakes”, “Violent Crimes” and “Wouldn’t Leave”.
Due to West’s recent controversial comments on our government and slavery, some listeners associate this album with his ideas about these topics. He lost a large amount of followers on his social media accounts. He also openly stated that he supports the U.S. president. However, weeks after the album was released, West apologized about his commentary on slavery and other hurtful things which made me wonder if he purposely publicly said things for free publicity.
After being disappointed by his views, I stopped listening to his music because I did not want to support him. One apology didn’t make his past declarations disappear but I already wanted to listen to his new music so the apology was an excuse for me to finally hear it. My first listen made me miss the old West. I used to love Kanye. I even had the pink polo, I thought I was Kanye.
On the other hand, something that has been a constant in West’s music is his authenticity. As time has gone on, it seems like he still creates original, creative work and manages to stay true to himself. He continues to push boundaries by rapping about things most contemporary rappers don’t, like murder in the first song on his album: “I Thought About Killing You”. He also exposes our society by pointing out common toxic trends men and women participate in. For example, in the song “All Mine”, West hints at Tristan Thompson cheating. In this album, there aren’t many songs. There’s no doubt that West is a lyrical genius. I’ve never heard a rapper include the words “medulla oblongata” in a song.
This album may have left some listeners wanting more because it’s relatively short. In fact, the songs amount to about 24 minutes total but each one is unique. Critics often say all the songs on an album can sound really similar but West maintains a steady vibe while varying his lyrics, beats and tunes.
