On Friday night, the Valencia Vikings and Hart Indians faced off at the College of the Canyon’s Cougar Field. Led on offense by Cal Berkeley commit JT Shrout, the Indians punted after a short possession. Valencia then finished off their first drive with a 36 yard touchdown pass to Mykael Wright, thrown by senior quarterback Connor Downs. The Indians gave up another touchdown in the first quarter, to senior running back Moises Haynes, trailing 0-14 going into the second quarter. The Indians added their first touchdown, a 61 yard catch and run by Davon Jones, but conceded 28 points to finish the second quarter up.

The Hart tribe seemed to give up, vacating the stands. Still, the Indians continued to play, trailing 7-42 at halftime. The Hart defense held the Vikings at 42 through the entirety of the second half, holding off the explosive offense of Valencia in a game where Hart failed to put up points. Wide receiver DJ Palmer caught a high touchdown pass in the end zone, with the last score of the game. Considering that one of Valencia’s touchdowns was a returned interception, this game could have been much closer with Hart’s defense playing well in the second half.

Marc Caporal, a starter on both offense and defense, remained positive after the loss.

“The scoreboard doesn’t always show the story of a game. There were plays, like Davon and DJ catching touchdown passes, where we looked like a true competitor. Next game against Valencia will look completely different.”

Hart football plays this Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. against Canyon.
